We treat all forms of anxiety and anxiety disorders using the latest evidence-based treatments. Here is an overview of this common category of psychological distress.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences at one point or another. It is a feeling of uneasiness, worry or fear. These feelings can range from mild to strong. Anxiety can be triggered by a specific event or situation. Alternatively, it can occur without any apparent reason.
Anxiety is a normal emotion that helps us deal with potentially stressful or dangerous situations. It can motivate us to take action, keep us alert, and be ready to respond to danger.
Anxiety Disorders
However, anxiety can interfere with our daily lives and cause significant distress when excessive.
Anxiety disorders are amongst the most common mental health disorders. For example, they affect 40 million adults in the U.S. age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population.
Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment. People with anxiety disorders often have co-occurring disorders, such as depression, substance abuse, or other anxiety disorders.
Anxiety disorders are characterised by a general feature of excessive fear (i.e. emotional response to perceived or real threat) and/or anxiety (i.e. anticipation of future threat) and can have negative behavioural and emotional consequences.
There are a number of different types of anxiety disorders, each with its own distinct set of symptoms. Social Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder are common conditions.
Anxiety Ring
Beware of the many purported treatments for anxiety with no scientific rationale or evidence base. While it may be tempting to believe in a quick fix, anxiety rings, crystals, and other similar objects have no scientific backing.
Anxiety disorders are treatable and often respond well to treatment. The most common treatments are psychological therapies and medication. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is generally regarded as the most effective psychological treatment for the most common anxiety disorders.
